Africa ICT Network

An Africa Business Community

As part of the CIO Forum program for 2009, we are extending our focus towards establishing an independent applied research centre to facilitate projects that bridge the gap between academia and commercial enterprises. We intend working closely with the four universities in the Western Cape and all faculties and departments where the academic program is relevant to Information Technology and Communication (ICT).

We believe there is a need for a research centre that can help address and promote the IT profession, qualification and certification and in particular develop leaders and Chief Information Officers (CIO). Competent IT management is crucial in service delivery in government. CIOs in the commercial enterprise face increasingly challenging global conditions and complexity. There will be an increasing and ongoing demand for understanding the problem domain, for cost effective solutions and for innovation that can drive a sustainable economy.

The Western Cape has the potential to be an ICT hub and in particular has a rich academic heritage. Clearly, we have the academic institutions and commercial enterprise but perhaps what we lack is the agility to connect. We believe that growing the potential and capacity in the Western Cape is largely dependent on how we enable innovation. We believe that this can be achieved in a sustainable way through grass roots initiatives that directly link people on the ground - people in academia and commerce where the needs exist.

We would like to welcome those who have supported the CIO Forum in the Western Cape in 2008 to contribute towards the program in 2009 and to see how we can take the forum further and how we can make a difference.
