I use Drupal - self taught like you and it was an steep learning curve. I just kept trying and when I got stuck I would search the discussion groups. So mostly I got the help I needed from casting around.
I have heard that Joomla has more in the way of support documentation and probably more free themes. But I have also heard that Drupal is more powerful in what it can do. I can't vouch for either of these statements, but anyway, I'm reluctant to change now that I have mastered Drupal (at least to beginners level). I really like it and it does what I want in terms of creating social, interactive sites.

I work with both Drupal & Joomla. we could compare notes/experience and perhaps you could focus on one or the other. Personally I spend more time on Drupal, maybe because it was the first one I learned, though I have lectured on both CMS's
